Some couples are just destined to be together right from the beginning. The rest of us, however, will need to work at turning a first date into a long-term relationship. Sometimes, making the right first impression can open the doorway to a second date, and if all goes well, potentially something significant. Not all couples will work, but trying some of these ideas will usually get you the opportunity to see if you have what it takes to take your first date to the next level.
Be yourself. Sure it sounds simple and clichéd, but pretending to be someone you are not is a surefire way to corrupt a relationship before it starts. Let her see the real you and see if she is interested. If she is, you’ve got a leg up on the competition; if she isn’t, you can cut your losses before investing more time than necessary. In all reality, you aren’t going to be happy if you aren’t being yourself, so there’s no need to paint a false picture right off the bat.
Don’t be afraid to show emotion. I’m not suggesting you pour your heart out and profess your undying love for her; that will probably just scare her away. Feel free to let her know about your relationships with your friends and family though, as it will give her a window into your ability to maintain a relationship and shows that you have the capacity to care for others. Don’t go overboard with it, but don’t be afraid to let her know that you have close bonds with your friends and family.
Take a sincere interest in her. Simple things like paying attention, asking questions, making eye contact and expressing an interest in her conversation can go a long way. Women like to feel appreciated and they like to know that their man is interested in what she has to say. Show her that you have the desire and the capability to listen to what she is saying and that you actually care about what she has to say.
There is no definitive formula that you can follow that will guarantee a second date and beyond. The ideas above will really only work if there is a true underlying interest from both parties. Some dates just need that extra little something to get them past the initial nervousness and awkwardness that most of us feel when we’re out with someone for the first time. These are in no way guaranteed to work, but they are solid suggestions that may help you get your foot in the door for a second meeting.
